AGRA
Agra, the word conjures a romantic image of the Taj Mahal created by Emperor Shahjahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. Agra is the epitome of a cultural city, with many historical relics beginning from the Persian to the Mughal era. Interwoven with tombs, a trip to Agra is a treat, not just to your eyes, but to your senses as well. But hidden behind these beautiful monuments is a thriving industrial city getting richer by the day. Agra could just as well be a Mecca for shopaholics with marble artefacts, leather goods and silk fabrics available at dearth cheap rates.

Main Languages: Hindi, English
When to Go: Between October and February
Local Transport: Rickshaws, autos and cabs are readily available. Walking might not be your favourite thing especially during summers, but in winters walking down the mist covered roads of Agra can turn out to be pretty romantic.
Currency: Indian Rupee (INR). 1 USD = 52 INR
Voltage: 230V/50Hz
Time Zone: Indian Standard Time (UTC +5:30)

What To Pack:
Since you'll be walking around a lot, wear light-weight shoes and carry a small back pack to make sure you have all your essentials handy. These include a sunscreen lotion with 20+ SPF, a hand sanitiser, a cap, an umbrella (if you're going to be there between May and August), and a good camera.

Shopping:
Marbles, leatherwork, crafts, Zardosi thread work, Panchi Petha and Dalmoth. Visit local factories for excellent leather buys, wallets, shoes, jackets and belts. The Agra State Emporium is a good place to shop for silk 'sarees' and 'dupattas'

Sightseeing:
Fathehbad Road
Fathehbad Road is the city's artery, connecting parts of the city with each other. It is also the commercial and business district housing most hotels, eating joints, and handicraft emporiums.

Fatehpur Sikri:
This ghost city was built from scratch in 1571 by Akbar and abandoned within 14 years. It is an architectural marvel, built with red sand stone, housing humongous courtyards, arches, palaces and domes. 37 km from Agra, the complex marries Islamic and Hindu styles of architecture. Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Taj Mahal:
Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Built in white marble, lying on the banks of the river Yamuna, the Taj Mahal is one of the most stunning structures of the world, embodying perfect symmetry and exquisite detailing. Spend the day here and watch the marble breathtakingly change colour.

Activities:
Ride a horse chariot to the Taj Mahal and enjoy regional performances like Braj Rasila, Charukala and Rasiya.

Events:
Regional festivals and fairs include Dauji ka mela, Kans Lila, cattle fair Jat Devi, cattle fair Kund Mela, cattle fair Gwal Balba, Meta ki Puja Jat Devi, Holi Milap, Mata-ka-mela, Shitla Mela, Parikrama of Shivji, Kailash Mela, Janamashthmi, Dussehra, Kali-ka-mela, Ram Lila, Urs Sufi Sahib and Bateshwar cattle fair.

Larger festivals include the Taj Mahotsav (February), Ram Barat (a special marriage procession of Shri Ram preceding Dussehra), Kailash Fair (organised at the Kailash Temple about 12 km from Agra)

JAIPUR
Any guesses why the Pink City Jaipur was painted Pink? In 1853, Jaipur's prosperous ruler King Sawai Man Singh got all city walls painted in pink to welcome the Prince of Wales, Edward VII). In the semi-desert lands of Rajasthan, Jaipur is the place for you if you are tired of frequenting hill stations in Northern India. A glorious past of Kings and palaces blended with a culture of pride and hospitality and topped up with a sepia urbanism, that's Jaipur for you!

Places to See:
The list is always large. The time is often less. Therefore you must semi-plan your itinerary as you pack for Jaipur. Nevertheless, here are some personal recommendations we would like to give! Let's begin with the best village in Jaipur, Chokhi Dhani. Spread over 10 acres, Chokhi Dhani (roughly, good village) is an ethnic theme village set up for tourists for both visiting and staying. The village is a 3-5 hour long engaging destination with ethnic culture of Jaipur at its best. The best time to the village around 4 or 5 in the evening. After a not so expensive ticket (including an unexplainably delicious dinner) you get to see a rustic and rural village with kiosks or performances including magic show, puppetry, archery, machaans, cots, Rajasthani dance, tarot reading, free Baajra ki roti, camel ride, live ethnic music band and countless other entertainment options. Travel around till the evening hour and make sure you have enough appetite because the dinner (for which you paid with the entry ticket) is Rajasthani food served in traditional style (usually savoured while seated on ground, but dining tables also available) with various dishes, unlimited servings and ready to serve traditionally clad staff! Food is perhaps the biggest attraction of Chowki Dhaani. Please note that village also offers luxury ethnic resorts for night stay. It has royal cottages, haveli suites, multicuisine restaurants, banquet halls, spa and barbeque among various other luxuries for tourists.

Next on a good itinerary should be the forts and palaces throughout the city. The most beauteous ones are Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort, two hill fortresses in proximity to each other. The fort of Amber, which was the former capital of Rajasthan, is a spending sight too. After these, some more places you may go for include Jaipur's famous Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Rambagh Palace and Albert Hall Museum. All the forts have two things in common, a strong hint of Jaipur's glorious past and infrastructural marvels. Another beautiful must-see place is the Jal Mahal. You will find it if you enter Jaipur from Delhi's direction, a large lake and a solitary palace standing in its centre, with 4 floors submerged in the lake and one above water. The history and concept of Jal Mahal are enough to qualify it as a must-see place!

Strongly influenced by Rajput culture, Jaipur has some famous temples attracting tourists. Some of these are Birla temple in main city, Shila Devi Temple in Amber fort where Prasad included alcohol, Govind Dev Ji Temple established by Jaipur’s founder Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

Shopping and Eating:
The 2 words you just read have a greater meaning in Jaipur than any other destination around Delhi. Jaipur has so much to sell to so many people and so low prices. Johari Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar, Nehru Bazaar and Kishnapol Bazaar are the famous markets where national and international tourists get best deals on items like jewellery, ethnic men’s & women’s attires, accessories, souvenirs, Rajasthani arts and crafts, miniature paintings, marble statues, mirror work items, and other stationery & decorative items. Even if you are a non shopper, strolling through the local shopping markets is enough to fill your eyes and nostrils with the rustic beauty of town. Of late, Jaipur has seen rise of various shopping malls and multiplexes including the famous World Trade Park.

You already know the most famous food destination in Jaipur, the buffet at Chokhi Dhani! The next must stop is Rawat Mishthan Bhandar, colloquiallycalled Rawat Kachori Wala. This is no restaurant but a spacious and clean halwai shop with Rajasthani Pyaaz Kachori, Sweet Mawa KAchori and Malai Ghevar among other delicacies. The city has a nice Saras Parlour (Saras is the milk cooperative of Jaipur) with milk products and other north Indian cuisines offered at low prices and amiable decor.

To sum it up, Jaipur must be visited for what it is, and for what it was. Plan it, and visit Jaipur and the first word you'll hear is khamaghani

Destination Information

The golden triangle tour of India is really amazing and figures among the top list of tours a person wants to do in this country. There is no doubt about the fact that India has been a glorious destination for the international traveler from times ancient. This tour covers the main cities of Delhi Agra Jaipur and is really an experience that puts a mark on your heart.

There is a set procedure for the tour. You start from Delhi to Agra to Jaipur and have the splendid experience of the wonderful monuments of Delhi, the magnificent Taj also called the monument of love and the royal palaces of Jaipur.

Agra is the city of the Taj Mahal, in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, some 200 km from Delhi.
Agra has three UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort in the city and Fatehpur Sikri nearby. There are also many other buildings and tombs from Agra's days of glory as the capital of the Mughal Empire.
The city has little else to recommend it. Pollution, especially smog and litter, is rampant and travellers are pestered by swarms of touts and hawkers at every monument, mosque, temple or palace. That said, the sites are some of the wonders of the world and no trip to India is complete without at least one visit to the Taj.

The Jantar Mantar is a collection of architectural astronomical instruments, built by Maharaja (King) Jai Singh II at his then new capital of Jaipur between 1727 and 1734. It is modeled after the one that he had built for him at the Mughal capital of Delhi. He had constructed a total of five such facilities at different locations, including the ones at Delhi and Jaipur. The Jaipur observatory is the largest and best preserved of these. It has been inscribed on the World Heritage List as "an expression of the astronomical skills and cosmological concepts of the court of a scholarly prince at the end of the Mughal period". Early restoration work was undertaken under the supervision of Major Arthur Garrett, a keen amateur astronomer, during his appointment as Assistant State Engineer for the Jaipur District.
